Tirupati: Doctor, clerk attempt suicide after tiff at government hospital

TIRUPATI: Junior doctors and medical interns at the SVR Ruia Government Hospital in Tirupati went on the warpath Friday morning upset by the attempted suicide of a fellow intern, Dr Venkataramana, the previous night.

The intern attempted suicide by consuming a chemical solution in his hostel room Thursday night. He was rushed to hospital and was reported to be out of danger this morning. Dr Venkataramana was reported to have been involved in a heated argument last Saturday with clerk Krishna Kumari of the hospital superintendent's office. She allegedly threatened to hit Dr Venkataramana him with a slipper.

However, for reasons yet to be ascertained, Dr Venkataramana attempted suicide. Meanwhile, the clerk Krishna Kumari also attempted suicide, fearing action against her.  Both incidents happened within half an hour. Krishna Kumari rushed to hospital where she was stomach washed to eject the poison she had consumed. Her condition was reported to be out of danger.

Following that incident, a complaint was lodged with police and junior doctors resorted to a strike. On Thursday, sub-collector Nishant Kumar held talks with the agitating junior doctors and promised to take action against the clerk. She was made to apologise.

On the other hand, following the advice of the SV Medical College Principal and others, junior doctors stayed in the hospital without making any protest demonstration. Later in the afternoon suspension orders were served on Krishna Kumari at her house after she was discharged from hospital. Following it junior doctors gathered at the hospital dispersed.
