VIJAYAWADA: Panchayat Raj Minister Nara Lokesh has directed the officials to prepare an action plan for spending Rs 10,000 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to enable the State to top the charts in effective implementation of the scheme.

Addressing a workshop organised for project directors of NREGS at the Interim Government Complex (IGC) in Velagapudi on Tuesday, Lokesh said despite being a small State, Andhra Pradesh stood first in implementation of several schemes and became a role model to other States in the country.

Stating that the State, despite providing 21.53 crore man-days of employment, slipped to the fourth position in NREGS implementation, he wanted the officials to aim for the top position  this financial year.

He underscored the need for taking up works without compromising on quality and without deviation from the guidelines. He recalling that Rs 3,200 crore funds sanctioned to the State under the material component category went back to the Centre due to the inefficiency of the previous government.
