VISAKHAPATNAM: With unwanted plants surrounding the Andhra University campus, it has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and snakes, posing threat to employees and hostellers. Hostellers complain of spotting snakes a number of times, especially during rainy season. They also say that a light rain leaves water stagnated in many places leading to mosquito menace.

All the departments in the university are surrounded by bushes and overgrown trees which are not maintained well. Thanks to the greenery in the varsity, they have become a haven for mosquitoes and snakes. Even the walls of the buildings have plants grown. Once it rains, water gets stagnated in some of the areas and the dry leaves shed by trees are left uncleaned, leading to breeding of mosquitoes. Employees and hostellers residing on the campus have to live with them.

They say that as new plants grow, reptiles enter the house. “As buildings are surrounded by trees, breeding of mosquitoes has increased so much so that we have to always keep the doors closed. During heavy rain, reptiles surface and enter the houses,” said an employee residing on campus.
