VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh circle of India Posts is targeting a revenue of Rs 4 crore under logistics post for 2018-19. It earned Rs 1.5 crore for the same in the previous financial year. To further strengthen its logistics post service, the department included five MMS vehicles to its existing fleet on Tuesday, which were flagged off by Chief Postmaster General K Balasubramanian.

Speaking to mediapersons on the occasion, Balasubramanian said, “At present, we have a dedicated logistics between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.”

“Due to non-availability of departmental MMS vehicles, the logistics post service was not provided from Vijayawada to Visakhapatnam and vice-versa on a daily basis. Similarly, if a vehicle had a mechanical failure, the department was not able to provide a spare vehicle for smooth transmission of mails. We have now overcome all those problems with the induction of new MMS vehicles.”

According to him, the postal department would emerge as a major player in parcel business of State government and corner major chunk of business from private parties. “We are now contemplating to have a dedicated logistic postal corridor between Vijayawada and Chennai.”

The government depends on the Department of Posts to dispatch sensitive materials relating to other departments. AP circle of the postal department has successfully delivered examination papers and other materials to various universities and state education boards. It also delivers NREGS job cards to all 572 mandal headquarters.

When asked about postal banking, Balasubramanian said arrangements were in place for inaugurating the service at 24 locations across the state. “We are waiting for green signal by the Reserve Bank of India. Infrastructure and staff are already in place,” he said.
