Inflows into Tungabhadra dam increasing steadily

Steady inflows into Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka due to heavy rains in upper catchment region of the river is expected to fill the dam in another 3 to 4 days.

VIJAYAWADA: Steady inflows into Tungabhadra dam in Karnataka due to heavy rains in upper catchment region of the river is expected to fill the dam in another 3 to 4 days, after which surplus water will be released to downstream of the river in Andhra Pradesh.

According to Irrigation department officials, at present Tungabhadra dam has received 82 TMC against its full reservoir level of 100.86 TMC. After meeting the drinking water requirement of western mandals of Kurnool district, the water would be released to Srisailam dam.

At present, there are no inflows into Srisailam Project and no inflows into any project downstream of Srisailam in Rayalaseema region. Meanwhile, the water levels at Prakasam barrage are marginally above the normal levels.

“There is a surplus of 1,500 cusecs and the same is being released downstream of Prakasam barrage into the river. On Tuesday, two gates were lifted. Through canals, 11,000 cusecs of water were released for irrigation purpose,” an official of irrigation department, Krishana delta said.

All the inflows into the river at Prakasam barrage were from Palleru, Munneru and Kattaleru stream that join the river downstream of Pulichintala. There were no outflows from the Pulichintala project as there were no outflows from Nagarjuna Sagar. Since last three days, there is not much rain in the catchment area of Krishna River between Pulichintala and Prakasam Barrage.

Irrigation department officials said that though there were heavy rains upstream of Almatti Dam in Karnataka and the project was receiving inflows at the rate of 1.6 lakh cusecs, chances of Srisailam Project receiving any inflows through Krishna are very slim.
