GUNTUR: Food Commission chairman JR Pushparaj has urged people to patronise handloom products and promote weavers. Inaugurating National Handloom Expo-2018 here on Thursday, he said that government is taking steps to protect handloom industry.

Speaking on the occasion, he said handloom formed a part of our culture and everyone should patronise it. Scores of weavers were dependent on this age-old industry which is slowly losing patronage. People should protect and preserve the handloom industry by buying products from weavers, he added. Pushparaj explained that handloom cooperative societies of Dharmavaram, Chirala, Venkatagiri, Mangalagiri, Uppada and Eluru earned unique recognition by bringing out new designs to appeal to a wider range of people.

He said that the government is ensuring financial support to weavers and appealed to the people to use handloom products at home. If people keep buying handloom products, the weavers would come out of their financial woes, he added. He called for effectively implementation of national textile policy for the benefit of weavers. With an aim to promote the use of handloom fabrics, several handloom stalls were set up at the expo.
