VISAKHAPATNAM: In a bid to meet the growing demand for travellers’ accommodation in the State, the Tourism Department on Friday released a notification asking people interested in letting out their blocks/rooms as homestays to get themselves registered. People can share rooms, blocks, apartments and individual houses with tourists.

House owners can be hosts and receive charges in return, district tourism officer Poornima Devi said. The government plans to tie up with a global travel agency acting as a facilitator between travellers, the Tourism Department and homestay owners.

“The agency will be confirmed by higher officials very soon. Once interested people register with our department, we will conduct a workshop for them and then inspect the accommodations to verify if they meet necessary standards. The plan is that interested persons can be hosts and provide food to visitors if required, just like in the west,” she said.
