Auto drivers protest for life tax cancellation

The Netaji Trolley Workers Union, Chilakaluripet Auto Drivers and Workers Union along with CPI leaders took part in the protest.

GUNTUR: Demanding cancellation of life tax on autorickshaws and four-wheelers and continuation of the old system, the CPI and unions of auto drivers staged a protest in front of Zilla Parishad office at Guntur on Monday.

The Netaji Trolley Workers Union, Chilakaluripet Auto Drivers and Workers Union along with CPI leaders took part in the protest. CPI Guntur district secretary J Ajay Kumar said the autorickshaw drivers were not in a position to pay the life tax. He alleged that the State government issued the GO and implemented the same with immediate effect, and that is why the drivers are afraid to run on the roads.

The fuel rates had been hiked abnormally, further increasing spare parts rates due to the imposition of taxes.

He demanded the life tax GO be rolled back and said the agitation in the State will be intensified if their demands were not paid heed to. The leaders submitted a memorandum to the collector and Transport department deputy commissioner, seeking justice.
