Andhra Pradesh: New syllabus textbooks in short supply

VIJAYAWADA:  The junior Intermediate textbooks with new syllabus are not available in the market even after the commencement of the new academic year. Bookstores in the city are selling textbooks of old syllabus at a discounted price and telling students to get the newly added topics photocopied. Only language textbooks of changed syllabus are available in the market.

T Dinesh Kumar, an Intermediate first-year student, who visited a bookshop in the city for buying textbooks, got books of old syllabus only. He says, “Our college began on June 1. Our lecturers are asking us to get the textbooks. But the bookstores do not have the group subject textbooks with new syllabus. Only language textbooks with new syllabus are available in the market.

When asked, the shopkeeper told me that the books with new syllabus are yet to reach the market. As only a few topics are newly added, he suggested me to buy old textbooks at a discount and get the newly added topics photocopied.”The Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) had placed an indent for over 5.5 lakh textbooks and got them printed.

Soon after the launch of textbooks on June 4, they were supplied to all the bookstores, the officials said. Even in the new syllabus books, the newly added topics are not listed in the index causing confusion among the students, whether they are new or old.Speaking to Express, P Muralidhar, a senior BIE official, said, “The new syllabus books are all supplied to bookstores and due to shortage of time we could not include the new topics in the index. We will order a probe into the sale of old syllabus textbooks in bookstores.”

Meanwhile, the bookstore owners said that they are yet to get adequate  stocks of new syllabus textbooks of group subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, History and Civics.  Narayana, a bookstore owner in the city, says, “The junior colleges reopened and people are thronging the bookstores for textbooks. We didn’t get adequate stock of new syllabus textbooks and the publishing houses also supplied us some old syllabus books. So we are selling those books at a discounted price. As only a few topics are missing, students can cope with them for the time-being.”

New jr Inter topics
As part of revising the textbook syllabus, the BIE has introduced topics like ‘Evolution of the Modern State’ in Civics, ‘The Role of Andhras in Freedom Struggle’ in History, ‘Atomic Structure, Chemical Bond’ in Chemistry, and ‘Conservative Force and Non-Conservative Force’ in Physics. A few topics have also been added in Maths
