KADAPA: As part of efforts to reform prisoners at Kadapa Central Prison, a digital library and furniture making training centre would soon be set up here. In a recent move, the state prisons department has decided to introduce digital libraries in central prisons at Rajamahendravaram, Nellore and Kadapa, and Rs 4.7 lakh was allocated to each prison for the purpose.

Six inmates would be able to read at a digital library at a time. Also, the furniture making training centre would be established at a cost of Rs 2.1 crore with coordination from Hindustan Petroleum. More than 100 prisoners would receive training for it.

After their release, the prisoners could eke out a living with the help of their skills, the officials said. Superintendent B Lakshminarasaiah said the Kadapa Central prison was earning Rs 50 lakh as income through the petrol bunk, industries and canteen being run by the prisoners. Also, the prisoners have been divided into skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled categories and are paid Rs 70, Rs 50 and Rs 30 respectively.

To educate the inmates, the AP Open University has opened a centre on the prison premises where many finished their UG and PG courses. Kadapa prison was set up in 1991 and upgraded into a central prison in 1992. At present, it has about 1,000 convicts.
