Mercury may rise to 42 degree Celsius: IMD

VISAKHAPATNAM: For the second consecutive day, Visakhapatnam recorded 41.4 degree Celsius at the airport, while Waltair reported 38.8 degree Celsius. This is the highest for the district this summer.  Maximum temperatures were markedly above normal at one or two pockets over coastal Andhra Pradesh. On Sunday, the highest temperature of 41.8 degree Celsius was recorded at  Jangamaheswaram followed by Visakhapatnam with 41.4.

IMD officials warn of the prevalence of heatwave conditions at isolated places in all the districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh for the next two days. Also, majority of the districts in coastal AP and Rayalaseema recorded temperatures above normal of 40 degree Celsius. Kavali,  Masulipatnam, Nellore, Bapatla, Tuni, Vijayawada and Tirupati recorded 40 degree Celsius.   

Further, the IMD predicts maximum temperatures likely to be around 40 to 42 degree Celsius, 3-4 degrees above normal, at a few places over coastal AP.

Meanwhile, Madhurawada in the city on Sunday was battered by heavy rain along with gusty winds. The heavy rain that lashed the city for about an hour turned the area cool and breezy. Many hoardings in Madhurawada collapsed and many trees were uprooted.

An upper air cyclonic circulation at 7.6 km above the mean sea level lies over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Odisha and north coastal AP.

The upper air trough in westerlies now runs from Odisha to south interior Karnataka across Telangana at 7.6 km above the mean sea level. Under its influence, thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds very likely to occur at isolated places in all the districts of coastal AP and Rayalaseema in the next 48 hours.
