Kadapa steel plant: TDP  MP writes to PM Modi

Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh said the Centre was yet to get the task force report relating to the establishment of steel plants in Kadapa as well as at Bayyaram of Telangana.

VIJAYAWADA: TDP Rajya Sabha MP CM Ramesh on Monday shot off letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh urging them to take immediate steps for establishing an integrated steel plant in Kadapa as assured in the AP Reorganisation Act. He threatened to undertake an indefinite fast if the Centre failed to take immediate steps in this regard.

In the letter, Ramesh recalled that under Schedule XIII of the AP Reorganisation Act it was mentioned that the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) shall examine the feasibility of establishing a steel plant in Kadapa district within six months from the appointed day. He said it was the statutory responsibility of the Centre to fulfil the promise.

Stating that the Ministry of Steel had sent a communication in June 2015, regarding the feasibility study of SAIL on setting up 3 MTPA(Million Tonnes Per Annum) steel plant in Kadapa district, he said the ministry had also reconstituted the task force in August 2015 to consider the feasibility issue.
However, the affidavit filed by the Ministry of Steel in the Supreme Court allegedly stating that the project is not economically viable has aroused emotions of the people of the State in general and those from Kadapa district in particular, he said.

Waiting for report: Centre

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh said the Centre was yet to get the task force report relating to the establishment of steel plants in Kadapa as well as at Bayyaram of Telangana.
The union minister said that the Centre, in the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, has not mentioned that setting up of steel plants in the said two locations is not feasible. It is a false propaganda, he said and wanted the State governments to provide necessary information at the earliest. He also reiterated that the Centre would set up another steel plant near Visakhapatnam.
