Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella seems to have emerged as the front-runner in the race to head the $78 billion Microsoft Corporation. Outgoing CEO Steve Ballmer had announced his retirement last August and according to reports in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, Satya Nadella appears to be the favourite to succeed Ballmer.

Microsoft is likely to make a formal announcement after its board meeting next week. Satya Nadella currently heads Microsoft’s cloud computing business. If chosen, he would be the third CEO in the Redmond-based Microsoft’s 38-year history after co-founder Bill Gates and Ballmer. Nadella will not only be the first professional from Hyderabad to head a top global company, but also joins a small circle of Indian-origin executives running leading multinationals such as Indra Nooyi, Chairman & Chief Executive, PepisCo, Ajay Banga, President & CEO, MasterCard and Anshu Jain, Co-CEO, Deutsche Bank.

Reports also suggest John W Thompson, member, Microsoft’s board of directors, is likely to replace Gates as the company’s Chairman. Thompson had in his blog last month revealed that the company had narrowed down its search for a new CEO to 20 candidates and then, to a much shorter list. In his 22-year stint at Microsoft, Nadella, was responsible for the company’s former corporate-software division worth $20 billion revenues. He also served as senior vice-president, R&D, online services division and vice-president, Business division.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Nadella was a member of the technology staff at Sun Microsystems. Nadella had his schooling at the Hyderabad Public School and received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Mangalore University. He holds a master’s in computer science from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and a master’s in business administration from the University of Chicago. Some of Nadella’s board affiliations include IT firms such as Riverbed Technology, Inc, Intelliprep Technologies Inc and Nirvaha, Inc.

Other contenders for the job include Kevin Turner, sales executive, Microsoft, Tony Bates, who joined Microsoft after its acquisition of Skype and Stephen Elop, ex-CEO, Nokia, who is set to join Microsoft once the Finnish firm’s mobile business is acquired.
