IDUPULAPAYA (Kadapa): YSR Congress president and Pulivendula MLA-elect YS Jaganmohan Reddy was elected YSRC Legislature Party leader at a meeting of the party’s newly-elected MLAs here Wednesday. Party leader Devineni Nehru moved a one-line resolution proposing Jagan Mohan Reddy’s name as YSRCLP leader and it was seconded by several others. As there was no opposition, he was declared elected YSRCLP leader unanimously. Addressing his party MLAs, MPs and other leaders soon after his election, Jagan reiterated that TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu’s “false promise” of loan waiver had marred his party’s winning chances at the hustings. He claimed that he had not made any false promises as his conscience did not allowed him to do so. “I am a man who abides by ideology and I can’t be untruthful.” Jagan held a meeting of the winning MLAs and MPs in the morning and with the losing candidates in the evening to analyse the factors that led to their good or bad performance in the polls.

At the meeting held with the winning candidates, Jagan thanked them for electing him as their floor leader in the Assembly. He recalled how he and his mother had to come out of the Congress for the sake of  their moral values and how they faced several hardships. “The Congress put me behind the bars for 16 months and tried to cause damage to my party. But not a single MLA deserted me and my party,” he claimed.

Stating that he had 70 MLAs and nine MPs, who were God’s gift, Jagan said the difference between losing and winning in  the elections was just 5 lakh votes. “Though several leaders asked me to make promises the way Chandrababu Naidu had made on loan waiver, I did not. I am a person with high values and ideals. Once you lose your ideals and trustworthiness, you cannot answer even your family members,” he said.

On his meeting with PM-designate Narendra Modi, which was made into a controversy by the opposition parties, Jagan Mohan Reddy said that he had met Modi only with the state’s  development in mind.

Though the party has 70 MLAs and nine MPs, 69 MLAs and eight MPs attended the meeting.  Allagadda MLA Bhuma Shobha Nagi Reddy died just before the election while Gudivada MLA K Nani did not come as he was reportedly unwell. Nandyal MP SPY Reddy too could not make it as he was said to be away in Delhi.
