Power generation has come to a grinding halt at the Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) at Ibrahimpatnam, near Vijayawada, Sunday night due to the ongoing strike of electricity employees in protest against the division of the state.

The seventh and last unit of the NTTPS stopped functioning from 10.10 pm Sunday as all employees of the unit have been on strike for the last four days.

This is the first time in the 34-year history of NTTPS that power production was totally shut down. The total installed capacity of the NTTPS is 1,760 MW. It has six units each with capacity of 210 MW and one with the capacity of 500 MW.

Chief engineer J Sammaiah confirmed that while six units stopped functioning for the last four days, the seventh was shut down Sunday night.
