The Telangana cultural festival of Bathukamma was celebrated with joy and gaiety by the women folk in the district on Saturday. In fact, the festival celebrated on the Durgashtami day on Saturday was Saddula Bathukamma or Pedda Bathukamma, which marked the culmination of the 10-day-long festival, during the first nine days of which it is celebrated as Chinna Bathukammas.

Women and children, attired in tradtional and colourful best, gathered at several places in the evening carrying cone-shaped Bathukammas and after placing them on the ground they gyrated around them singing ‘Bathukamma Bathukamm Vuyyalo...” and other songs.

Women folk competed with each other to create the best and biggest Bathukammas, in the process, some women created Bathukammas four to six feet tall.

Later, they carried the Bathukammas on their heads to nearby tanks, ponds, lakes and rivers for immersion, marking the culmination of the festivities.
