The protracted seat-sharing talks between the BJP and TDP continued on Wednesday with both sides sticking to their guns, even as notification for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Telangana was issued on Wednesday.

Hectic parleys were on between the old NDA allies as the last-minute hitch was over the choice of constituencies.

A leader involved in the discussion in Delhi said the nature of all constituencies have changed since the state bifurcation. The BJP is asking for 14 out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana and Seemandhra, while looking for nearly 70 Assembly seats in both regions. It wants Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Narsapur, Tirupati and Rajahmundry LS seats in Seemandhra and Chevella, Mahbubnagar and Malkajgiri among others in Telangana. However, the TDP is not willing to part with them.

“The talks are in the final stages and discussions have been good,” said Prakash Javadekar, the BJP spokesperson and party interlocutor with the TDP. Likening the alliances to marriage, Javadekar said they involved long negotiations. “Alliances are like marriages. Marriage is also an alliance. It either happens hundred per cent or does not,” he quipped.

As per negotiations, the BJP is likely to get eight LS seats of the 17 in Telangana and five of 25 in residual AP. The BJP leaders had been maintaining that alliance could be announced on Wednesday evening or on Thursday when Narendra Modi would be in Delhi.

Sources told Express in Hyderabad that soon after a national TV channel aired a poll survey on Tuesday showing an upswing for the TDP in Seemandhra, the party hardened its stance in talks with the BJP. In fact, TDP leaders who were to meet Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley late on Tuesday did not turn up for the meeting.

The BJP too, on its part, is firm on its demands. On Wednesday, while TDP’s Telangana leader E Dayakar Rao claimed that a poll pact with the BJP has been sealed, but BJP leader Lakshminarayana disputed his claims in Delhi.

It is learnt that if both the sides agree on Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Rajahmundry, an announcement on alliance would be made Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Congress and TRS seem to have decided to wait and watch for the TDP-BJP alliance to take shape. TPCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah, while blasting TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao, however, let it be known that his party was still interested in an alliance with the pink party. He said his party was ready for negotiations.

The reasoning of the Congress and TRS seems to be that if the TDP and BJP do strike a deal, the combine could bag enough number of seats in Telangana to make or break the government - as per latest surveys, the TRS and Congress are neck and neck and neither may get a majority. Sources said the inordinate delay in finalising the Congress list for Telangana shows that the ruling party is still waiting for a possible tie-up with the TRS.

The TPCC chief had divulged that the Congress and CPI had in-principle agreed to have an electoral understanding. However, both the camps are still working on seat-sharing.
