MANGALORE: Known to most as the ‘people’s doctor’ Dr B M Hegde on Monday expressed his happiness about the government conferring on him the Padma Bhusan Award.

Speaking to Express over phone, he said, “I did not expect this award and it makes me more responsible as a professional doctor.” “There are enormous demerits in allopathy and I still expose them. Some people will not tolerate me for that, but I critically analyse the present medical methods,” he added.

Hegde started teaching at a very young age and teaches when he finds time even today. He is acclaimed as a good communicator. A visiting professor in almost all countries except the South American continent, he also has been a considerate and competent examiner for graduate and postgraduate students. He has guided many students for their doctoral thesis in many Universities, in addition to being the Ph D examiner in some of the universities.

His disdain for hi-tech stuff for diagnosis when time-tested bedside methods and common sense alone will suffice, has moulded the thoughts of hundreds of future doctors. His methods have often been considered unconventional but the thousands of students who have graduated from there stand testimony to the fact that his methods did pay rich dividends.
