BANGALORE/TUMKUR: The Yelahanka police arrested the Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare Department of Tumkur, Radhakrishna, 58, following a rape case filed against him by a 38-year-old widow. The official allegedly promised the woman government grants for her school and raped her. The victim, a native of Tumkur, runs a school for the specially-abled children in Batawade, Tumkur district.
In her complaint filed with Yelahanka police, the woman stated that she was running the school for over a decade, which has more than 100 students. She had applied for government grants with the Women and Child Welfare Department. For three years, Radhakrishna had allegedly sexually exploited her claiming to get the grants allotted. This year too she had applied for grants, and he had allegedly asked for sexual favours from her in return.
“On Thursday, Radhakrishna took me to a lodge near Kogilu Cross and raped me there. He threatened to kill me if I revealed the matter to anyone,” she accused.
Based on her complaint, police arrested Radhakrishna on Friday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North East division) Dr G Ramesh said that the woman was subjected to a medical check-up and the accused was remanded in judicial custody. “We have questioned him, investigation revealed that the duo had checked into the hotel on Thursday.”
However, police suspect that the allegations in the complaint could be false. “She has stated that he sexually abused her for three years, still she did not file a case during this period. We suspect that the duo had consensual sex. Something might have gone wrong between them and hence she has filed the case,” sources said.
Police have registered a case under section 376B (intercourse by public servant with woman).
