Molakalmuru silk sarees that were stipulated to a geographical boundary have gone global with the opening of an esales portal.
People across the globe can now avail the products by a single click at their doorsteps.
The e-portal consists of basic information about the sarees, weavers, co-operative societies associated with the production of the sarees, various weaves, including the price tag and finally the way to procure the sarees sitting at home.
Details of the officials involved in creating this portal for the weavers of Molakalmuru are also inserted with a google map on the way to reach the saree town.
Direct interaction
Deputy director, Department of Handlooms and Textiles, GT Kumar told Express that the e-portal brings down the supply chain and bridges the gap between producers and consumers.
Through this, the entire share of profit can be availed by the weavers, which hitherto went to the middlemen.
“History has been created with the sarees going global.
Weavers who were in the debt traps have now come out of it.
The portal will improve their finances.
Setting up of 65-70 new looms is the best example,” he added.
Business development
Dr Chandrashekhar, director of GoCoop that is promoting co-operative products globally said: “Awareness about the existence of the cluster, corporate brand image building and globalisation will take place.
This will enhance the social cause and create awareness that the sarees are woven by the poor using ecofriendly products.
Employment is generated for the rural people, and more importantly the traditional handloom industry will be safeguarded.”
History
With a rich heritage and tradition, the Molakalmuru sarees were sold using intermediaries resulting in majority of profits being diverted.
But the new portal helps the weavers to directly enjoy the share of the profit.
Globalisation had its impact on the saree industry.
The taluk that had about 1,500 weavers engaged in making silk sarees has come down to 440.
The socio-economic condition of most of the weavers is pitiful and most of them have taken up other occupations leaving the silk handloom weaving industry in the lurch.
