BELGAUM: The Maharashtra government is planning to set up a Maharashtra Information Centre at Belgaum, sources said.

The sources said the Maharashtra government was collecting details about the areas to be covered by the centre and the number of officials required for it.The formation of the centre or Maharashtra Parichaya Kendra may face stiff opposition from the state government and other Kannada outfits.

The Maharashtra government might purchase a building in Belgaum for the purpose, the sources said.

They added that the Public Relations Department of Maharashtra government collected number of Marathi people residing in the border areas of Belgaum.

An information centre works as a public relation centre of Maharashtra in Goa. A top-level Maharashtra official, on the condition of anonymity, said the proposed centre at Belgaum would be a full-fledged set-up, and an officer of Maharashtra Administrative Service level would be posted as its in-charge.

The officer said the centre would look after the welfare of the pro-Maharashtrians residing in border areas.
