DAVANGERE: Five persons were killed and seven others sustained injuries when a Tempo Trax Cruiser vehicle and a truck collided with each other near Rajanahalli village, Harihar, on the national highway-4 (NH 4) in the wee hours of Saturday.

The deceased were all Sabarimala pilgrims; four persons died on the spot while another died in hospital. 13 persons hailing from Vantagoda village in Mudhol taluk of Bagalkot district were travelling in the vehicle when the accident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Vittal Madar, 32, Thippanna, 27, Siddu Desai, 22, and Lakkappa, 28, and Manjunath, 17; Manjunath succumbed to injuries later at the government hospital on Saturday morning. The eight injured were shifted to hospitals in Davanagere and Harihar for immediate treatment, police added.

According to Harihar Rural Police, the Tempo Cruiser, which was returning to Hubli from Sabarimala, collided head-on with the truck at about 2.40 am.
