GULBARGA: A young girl of Mominpura locality in Gulbarga died on Wednesday after a dog bit her on February 3, the family of the deceased reported on Thursday.

Eight-year-old Somaiya, the daughter of Abdul Rauf was attacked by stray dogs.

The sources said on the same day dogs attacked 24 people in the same locality and they were all admitted to district government       hospital. Somaiya was later admitted to Gachinmani Hospital, Gulbarga and later was  shifted to NIMHANS   Hospital Bangalore on       February 28.

The activists of Gulbarga Muslim Welfare Association led by District Congress Committee President Syed Mazar Hussain,  District Youth Congress committee, Janata Dal (S), Indian National league staged an agitation on Thursday at Muslim Chouk. The protestors submitted a memorandum to  Gulbarga Deputy Commissioner demanding a compensation of `5 lakh to Somaiya’s family. Also, they demanded all others who were bit by dogs on the same day should be compensated properly.

The agitators demanded action against the officials of Gulbarga Maha Nagara Palike (GMP) and district government hospital for failing in their duties.

Meanwhile,  Commissioner of Gulbarga Maha Nagar Palike C Nagaiah said an immediate compensation of `1,0000 was paid to the  parents of the deceased.

He added GMP will pay the expenses if the victims submit hospital bills. He said the  local dog catchers caught 500 stray dogs. He added a  dog catching team from Kerala will arrive in a few days to speed up the process of catching dogs.
