Mixed response to Belgaum Bandh for Thackeray

The bandh called to mourn the demise of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray received a mixed response in the district on Sunday. All the commercial establishments in the city remained closed till evening.

Ganpat Galli, Raviwarpeth, Khade Bazar, Ramdev Galli, Kirloskar Road and adjoining areas remained closed all day.

Though Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses provided uninterrupted services, the officials said the number of commuters were less.

Shiv Sena’s call for bandh was supported by Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES), Marathi Yuva Aghadi, several saravjanik ganpati utsav mandals and other youth organisations.

Former mayor Sambhajirao Patil, former deputy mayor Prakash Shirolkar, former mayor Malojirao Ashtekar and other leaders led the rally in the morning from Bogarves.

While the police had denied permission for the rally on Saturday, heavy bandobast was clamped in the city on Sunday.

In a few commercial areas, police asked some opened commercial establishments to close till the rally passed through their street, to avoid any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, commercial establishments located in outskirts like Mahantesh Nagar, Hanuman Nagar, Shrinagar, Ganeshpur Vadgaon extension and other areas worked as usual. No organisation forced any commercial establishment to close, due to which the bandh was observed peacefully.

Total bandh was observed in Khanapur taluk, Sankeshwar and Nipani. Whereas Chikodi and Athani taluks responded poor to the bandh. But, huge number of police were deputed in these areas, as they are located near the Maharashtra border.
