Focus on overall development of students: Kageri

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri urged parents and teachers to look beyond students’ marks and focus on evaluation based on overall development.

The minister gave this call in connection with Teachers Achievement Year being celebrated this year across the state to mark the 125th birth anniversary of former President-educationist Dr S Radhakrishnan.

“At a time when certificates are merely leading to mindless employment, we have to go beyond indicators such as syllabus and marks. Our focus should be on personality development of our children,” Kageri said while speaking at a programme organised to mark Teachers’ Day at the Government Girls Pre-University College in Malleswaram on Saturday.

“This year, I want our teachers to improve their skills, abilities and pedagogical methodology. The idea of dedicating an entire year for teaching is to further your responsibilities as teachers,” Kageri said. He called upon teachers to put up a united front while addressing issues of promotions, service regulations and other administrative matters.

‘State government ready to support teachers’

“The state government is ready to support teachers. For instance, we are providing aid to schools started upto 1995 and we have been trying to address issues in transfers. Recently, we have filled 149 posts for headmasters in the state,” he added.

The programme was organised by the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association and C N Ashwath Narayan Foundation. Six physical education teachers, six fine arts teachers, seven aided schools teachers, seven headmasters from high schools, six primary teachers and ten administrators were felicitated on the occasion.

MLC Ramachandra Gowda, former MLC K Narahari and Malleswaram MLA C N Ashwath Narayan were present on the occasion.
