The state government will construct a memorial dedicated to Rashtrakavi G S Shivarudrappa in Jnanabharathi campus where he will be cremated with state honour on Thursday, Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner G C Prakash said.
A team of officials from the Department of Kannada and Culture, including Prakash visited the Kalagrama premises on Tuesday afternoon. They finalised a portion of land where a reading room or library in the name of the departed poet would be constructed.
“(Shivarudrappa) had informed his family members that he doesn’t want a tomb. He will be cremated as per his family’s wish. In that place we plan to construct a reading room or library. Preliminary work has started,” Prakash said.
Kalagrama is located on a 20-acre land behind Bangalore University’s Jnanabharathi campus at Marathahalli that houses the Kuvempu Bhasha Bharati Pradhikara and Indira Gandhi Art Foundation.
Shivarudrappa’s body will be first brought to his Banashankari 2nd Stage residence on Thursday morning and then taken to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat premises at Chamarajpet. “It will then be taken to Ravindra Kalakshetra and finally to Kalagrama where he will be cremated with a guard of honour,” said Prakash.
