11-year-old dies in toy train accident

It was a joy ride that went wrong. A 11-year-old boy died here on Friday after coming under the wheels of a toy train on Thursday.

Police have identified the victim as Shambhu Raju Kalal, a resident of Sharavati Nagar here. Shambhu sustained serious injuries in the mishap and despite immediate medical aid, he succumbed to his injuries.

Shambhu, his classmates and a teacher had gone to MG Park after watching Sangolli Rayanna. After lunch they boarded the toy train.

According to a source, the driver, Basavaraj Keresur, was rash and negligent. Shambhu, who was sitting in the last coach, slipped and fell and was grievously injured. The coach also derailed. The boy was immediately rushed to KIMS and later shifted to SDM Medical Hospital, where he died.

It is yet to be ascertained whether the derailment occurred before or after the boy fell. Inspector Shrinivas Handa said they have registered a case of rash driving against Keresur, who is absconding.

Angry locals staged a protest demanding compensation and justice for the victim’s family. They have asked the police to book the headmistress of the Government Higher Primary School for taking the students to the park without permission.

The protesters alleged that negligence on the part of the district administration and Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation were responsible for such mishaps.

Members of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti have urged that `10 lakh be given as compensation to the boy’s parents and stringent action must be initiated against authorities concerned.

BEO R S Mullur told Express that he has asked the headmistress to give a report on the incident and clarified that the students were taken to the park as it was lunch time.
