Polls to ULBs on March 7

Despite strong opposition from all political parties, the State Election Commission on Thursday announced poll dates to 208 urban local bodies, including seven city corporations, excluding Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Polls will be held on March 7 and counting on March 11. The code of conduct will come into effect from Friday,  state election commissioner C R Chikkamath said.

The poll dates were announced a day after the Supreme Court directed the Chief Secretary to comply with the directions issued by the SEC.

Chikkamath told reporters that elections will be held as per the 2007 reservation list as the state government had not provided the revised reservation list.

As per the Apex Court order, the state government had to provide the list by February 4.

However, the government on Thursday made a last-ditch effort to put off the elections. It sent a revised reservation list changing the roster and providing 50 per cent reservation for women. But, the SEC did not consider it.
