Suryanelli convict held in Sagar

Dharmarajan, the absconding convict in the 1996 Suryanelli gang-rape case, was arrested on Friday by the Kerala Police from Sagar town of Shimoga district on Friday.

Dharmarajan, an advocate, had taken the whole of Kerala by surprise with his television appearance the other day after going absconding almost 13 years ago by jumping bail in the case. Dharmarajan, the third accused in the case and the only person to be convicted, had put authorities in a fix with his revelations on the involvement of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien in the rape.

According to Kottayam SP C Rajagopal, the investigation team located Dharmarajan with the help of mobile phone signals. He refused to disclose how the team secured the advocate’s number. “With the help of the cyber cell we found his exact place, which was a temple in the Western Ghats forests. He had clean-shaven his head to disguise himself,” Rajagopal said.

The case pertains to the alleged abduction and rape of a 16 year-old from Suryanelli in Idukki district in 1996. She was forcibly taken to different places and allegedly raped by several men.
