Former Union minister Basavanagoud Patil Yatnal sent his resignation letter to JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda on Thursday. He is likely to join the BJP.

Yatnal, however, has not given any specific reasons to resign from the party. “I am leaving the party due to the  prevailing national and State political situation,” he said in the letter.

Yatnal, who was the working president of the party, is reportedly an aspirant for the State president’s post vacated by Opposition leader H D Kumaraswamy.

After Yatnal was overlooked in favour of former minister A Krishnappa, Patil had allegedly decided to quit.

A couple of days ago, Yatnal who was a Minister of State for Railways in the NDA government, headed by Atal Behari Vajapayee, had praised BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi.
