BJP spokesperson Nirmala Seetharaman accused the Congress-led UPA government of trying to impose an undeclared Emergency in the country ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Nirmala said efforts are being made to control the media, foist cases on Opposition leaders and misuse the CBI to hush up corruption cases against the ruling coalition. All these developments indicate possibilities of imposing an undeclared Emergency in the country, she charged.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister for Home Sushil Kumar Shinde are inciting communal passions through their irresponsible statements, she alleged.

She demanded that Rahul Gandhi tender an apology for making a statement that many Muslims affected by the recent communal riots in Muzaffarnagar, were coming under the influence of the ISI. Referring to Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh’s statement that the BJP had no base, except in seven states of the country, Nirmala said the fate of the Congress was no different in many states. “Neither Congress president Sonia Gandhi nor Rahul Gandhi are in a position to step into Andhra Pradesh, where the Congress is in power for the last 10 years.  The Congress cannot fight any election in TN without an alliance with any regional parties there,” she ridiculed.
