Minister for Sugar Prakash Hukkeri said that the state government plans to provide farmers a subsidy of 75 per cent for the purchase of solar-powered irrigation pump sets.
At a gathering at Jewargi and Afzalpur Taluks Sugarcane Growers convention here on Sunday, he said that the each unit cost at least `6 lakh, and the state government would provide a subsidy of nearly `5 lakh to the farmers. Farmers will have to bear the remaining cost. This project will help stabilise power supply to irrigation pump sets round the clock. Responding to the demand for a support price of `3,000 per tonne of sugarcane, he said that a 15-member committee comprising farmers, sugar factory representatives and officials would decide on the price. At present, the government is providing Rs 2,400 per tonne. “This time the purchase price of sugarcane will be more than Rs 2,400, and hence the farmers need not worry. The government will also consider the demand for a purchase price of Rs 3,000 per tonne,” he said.
Refuting allegations that the state government was purchasing sugar only from factories in the old Mysore region and not the Hyderabad Karnataka region, Hukkeri said that the government had recently purchased about 10-20 quintals of sugar from Bidar district itself.
