To ensure total transparency in the governance of panchayat bodies, the Department of Rural Development and the Panchayat Raj has designed a programme through which proceedings of grama sabhas will be aired.
Rural Development and the Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil said that the government is releasing a grant of Rs 10 crore to empower over 1,000 gram panchayats with necessary electronic gadgets to arrange for the live telecast of grama sabhas. “The proceedings of the grama sabhas will be presented to the villagers through live telecast employing local TV cable networks,” Patil said adding that it will be launched in March last week.
He claimed that this is the first of its kind exercise to adopt information technology in the governance of the gram panchayats.
Shiraguppi panchayat in Athani taluk and Hulakoti in Gadag district, have already telecast their proceedings with the help of the local TV network operators, he said.
Karnataka has won top honours in supporting Rural Self-Employment Training Institutes (RSETIs), Patil said. RSETI is spearheading training programmes for youths in rural areas. “Karnataka has won the best prize for its initiative to encourage entrepreneurship among rural youths involving NGOs and the banking institutions,” Patil said.
