Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa is almost certain to enter the poll battle in the upcoming Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate from Shimoga constituency.
Yeddyurappa had earlier expressed his readiness to become the Chairman of the BJP’s Campaign Committee which would allow him to lead the campaign to win the maximum number of seats for the party in the election.
However, according to party sources, the BJP leadership has convinced Yeddyurappa to contest from Shimoga constituency, which is now being represented by his son B Y Raghavendra.
Most of the party leaders felt that it could prove difficult for the party to win from Shimoga this time if Raghavendra is fielded again.
After much deliberations, Yeddyurappa has expressed his readiness to contest if it is absolutely necessary.
With BJP having high expectations of forming the next government at the Centre under the leadership of Gujrat Chief Minister and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, it is said that Yeddyurappa would get a berth in the Union government considering his stature.
Bringing Raghavendra to State politics would also suit Yeddyurappa’s long-term plans to groom his son to inherit his political legacy, it is said.
The party is already busy formulating its strategies for the elections for Shimoga keeping in mind reports that Madhu Bangarappa, son of former chief minister S Bangarappa, would be the JD(S) candidate while Congress is expected to field Kumar Bangarappa, elder son of Bangarappa, or Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Rathnakar.
