Former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa formally returned to the BJP on Thursday along with a group of his KJP followers amid festive celebrations at the State BJP headquarters at Malleswaram.
Yeddyurappa arrived at the party office in a procession after performing a special puja at the Kadumalleshwara temple. His return to the party after over a year has re-energised the party leaders and cadres who were demoralised after the party’s defeat in the Legislative Assembly election last year.
An elated former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda admitted: “Today, BJP is reborn with Yeddyurappa’s return. BJP’s strength has doubled now.”
Addressing the gathering after receiving the membership receipt from the party’s State unit President Prahlad Joshi, Yeddyurappa said he has not returned seeking any post or power. “I have returned to the party to root out the Congress from the State and the country. I have realised that we have committed unpardonable crime by fighting among ourselves, which enabled Congress to come to power,” he said.
Yeddyurappa said he regretted whatever happened in the past and said he has “forgotten the bitter past and learnt a lesson”.
He assured that such mistakes would not be repeated and all the leaders would work together without any differences of BJP or KJP to realise the common goal of making Narendra Modi the next prime minister.
He also declared that he would tour every village and taluk in the State to strengthen the BJP and win at least 20 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.
Former ministers Shobha Karandlaje, M P Renukacharya, KJP MLAs U B Banakar, Vishwanath Patil and Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli and hundreds of KJP leaders and workers also joined the saffron party on Thursday.
Welcoming Yeddyurappa back into the party, BJP’s National General Secretary H N Ananth Kumar said the countdown has begun for the Congress with Yeddyurappa’s return to the BJP. “Rooting out the Congress from the State and the country is our mission. Working in unison with Yeddyurappa, we will bring back the Lotus (BJP) regime. We are determined to see Modi as the next Prime Minister,” he said.
