A 13-member committee headed by retired chief secretary S V Ranganath has been formed to work on the set-up of a Rural Development and Panchayat Raj University in the state.
The committee has been asked to submit a report in two months on where to set up the institute, whether it should be a fully research-oriented university, course modules and what to expect of it in five years.
The committee has also been asked to see the functioning of similar universities in other states like the Institute of Rural Management in Gujarat, Gandhigram Rural University in Tamil Nadu and Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan.
The committee members include experts from agriculture universities, environmentalists and people who have contributed to rural development.
The order passed by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has said good practices followed by gram, taluk and zilla panchyats in the state and more will be taken into account by the committee.
