The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has completed the process of shortlisting the party’s probable candidates for the coming Lok Sabha elections from the State. The list of shortlisted candidates has been submitted to the party’s central leaders.
KPCC president Dr G Parameshwara told Express that the list was finalised recently at the KPCC’s State Election Committee meeting.
Parameshwara said he, along with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, held talks with the party’s central leaders during their stay in Delhi for the one-day AICC session recently. “One more round of discussions will be held before the list is presented to the AICC’s Central Election Committee (headed by Vayalar Ravi),” he added.
He said he met senior party leaders, including AICC general secretaries C P Joshi and Madhusudan Mistry, and held talks about fielding strong candidates in all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.
Refusing to divulge the names of the candidates in the list, Parameshwara said, “Congress is a mass-based party and has to accommodate the aspirations of all sections in society. Therefore, we need more discussion and more scrutiny before finalising the candidates’ list”.
The KPCC president, however, expressed confidence that the AICC’s Central Election Committee would announce the list well ahead of all other political parties.
“The first list of party candidates is expected to be announced in the early week of February,” he said.
It may be recalled that the KPCC’s Election Committee, which met recently, had reportedly shortlisted the names of Janardhana Poojary (DK), Nandan Nilakeni (Bangalore South), C K Jaffer Sharief and H T Sangliana (Bangalore Central), B K Hariprasad, Chandrashekhar or Ramesh Gowda (Bangalore North), Pramoda Devi (Mysore) and Prasannakumar/Manjunath Bhandary (Shimoga).
