Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) Chairman Nandan Nilekani on Saturday said Aadhaar (unique ID card for all citizens) is very important for the future of India.
He was speaking at a programme organised to inaugurate Al-Ameen Evening PU College near Lalbagh Main Gate.
Nilekani said, “We have already registered 56 crore people and by 2014 March- April, we will cross 60 crore mark. Through Aadhaar, people can open a bank account. They can get money, insurance policy, and also their security increases.”
On allegations about certain loopholes in the project, Nilekani said ,“These objections are completely unwarranted. This project has benefited 56 crore people and they are the voice of the people, not the few who are complaining.”
Speaking to students about his shift from being a technocrat to a bureaucrat, Nilekani said, “It was a challenge, but then I was fortunate to get everything in life when working with Infosys. I thought I should spend my next few years giving back to society.”
