Governor H R Bharadwaj said that he will direct the State government to sanction more powers to the State Election Commission (SEC) to hold the elections for chairpersons of urban local bodies (ULBs).
Speaking at a programme organised to mark National Voters’ Day by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday, he said the commission is an independent body which has conducted 14 Lok Sabha elections so far, but the SEC is not treated on par with ECI.
“I am unhappy that the State Election Commission has to approach the court to allow them to conduct the elections for mayor and presidents in urban local bodies,” he said.
Addressing young voters, the Governor said, “You are looking forward to a bright future and it depends on you. Use your power and cast vote. Don’t get influenced by any political parties. Elect representatives who are best suited for the Common man. Just for greed, do not sell your precious right.”
State Election Commissioner C R Chikkamath said, “I have written to the State government many times, but in vain. Now that the Governor has assured on this, we have hope.”
Chikkamath said the final voters’ list will be published on January 31.
Earlier, the SEC had scheduled to publish it on January 6. However, there were some duplication of voters’ names. As on date, there are 4.46 crore voters across the State, of which 82 lakh are in Bangalore.
