BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has mooted child-friendly bus terminals across the state.

In a communication to the state government and Transport Department, commission chairperson Kripa Alva has recommended creation of child-friendly environment at both government and private bus terminals, with specially dedicated rooms to breastfeed infants.

This decision was taken in a meeting of the commission held on November 10. In the recommendation, Kripa Alva, stated: “I would like to bring it to your notice that while waiting for buses at bus terminals, young mothers with their children are facing humiliation to breastfeed their child in public places like bus terminals. It is necessary for the government to construct dedicated rooms for the purpose of breastfeeding.”

Before submitting the recommendations, the commission did a study of the actual situation at bus terminals. “It has come to our notice that many are avoiding breastfeeding their child while waiting for a bus and are letting their child starve. Considering this, in the best interests of children, there is a need to create child-friendly environment and that is our responsibility,” Kripa Alva said.

The government has to reply to the commission about the actions initiated based on the recommendations.
