BENGALURU: Almost half of the higher education institutions in state failed the primary level of accreditation process conducted by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) between December 1, 2015 and December 13, 2016.

Twenty six institutions had applied for the Institutional Eligibility for Quality Assessment(IEQA), but only 14 could pass the test. Kamala College of Management Studies, Bengaluru, and Aloysius Degree College, Bengaluru, were among the 12 institutions that failed to make the cut.(see box for the list).
As per the NAAC data available with Express, 520 institutions across the nation applied for the primary level test-IEQA in past one year, of which 178 failed to clear the same.

IEQA is a status granted to an institution in the planning stage of its assessment and accreditation.
It is an automated process and the criteria therein are applicable to all Higher Education institutions and marks are assigned confirming the fulfillment of eligibility criteria set by the NAAC.
According to authorities from NAAC, IEQA is to make sure how the institution understands itself, its strengths weakness, potentials and limitations.
