Mysore varsity V-C may face action for ignoring government order

University of Mysore vice-chancellor Prof K S Rangappa is likely to face action for making appointments at Yuvaraja’s College in violation of state government directions.

BENGALURU: University of Mysore vice-chancellor Prof K S Rangappa is likely to face action for making appointments at Yuvaraja’s College in violation of state government directions. In an official communication to Raj Bhavan, Higher Education Department principal secretary Bharatlal Meena has recommended initiating action against Prof Rangappa.

Confirming this, a senior official of the department  (university section) said, “We have written to the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of Universities, on Thursday recommending action against the vice-chancellor of the University of Mysore.”
The official explained that as V-Cs are appointed by the Chancellor, they report to him directly, and the government or Higher Education Department cannot take action. “We can just recommend to the Governor and give the reasons for seeking action. That is exactly what we have done in this case as the government has no power to initiate action or suspend the vice-chancellor,” the official said.

Two days ago, the state government had suspended Dr C Basavaraju, registrar (administration), University of Mysore, and on Wednesday, the principal of Yuvaraja’s College was suspended in this connection. “As everything was done with the approval of the vice-chancellor, who is also chairman of the Governing Council of the college, it is necessary to initiate action against him,” the official explained.
