Congress wins Nanjangud and Gundlupet bypolls

Counting of votes began across 10 assembly constituencies in eight states on Thursday; elections for Delhi, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam and Madhya Pradesh took place on Sunday. 

Here are the live updates: 

  • Kalale Keshavmurthy of the Congress has won the Nanjangud seat with 86,212 votes, while his rival V Srinivas Prasad of BJP lost with 64,878 votes, a difference of a staggering 21,334 votes.

  • Geeta Mahadev Prasad, a first time contestant and the widow of Minister Mahadev Prasad has won the seat with 90,258 votes. Her closest rival, BJP candidate  C S Niranjan Kumar lost by 10,877 votes as he managed to get 79,381 votes.

  • Congress surges ahead in the final rounds of counting in the bye polls from both Nanjangud and Gundlupet, making win a certainty.
  • The eight round of counting in Nanjangud has Congress candidate Kalale Keshavmurthy with 44,671 votes and BJP candidate Srinivas Prasad trailing with 28,962 votes. As a Congress win seems certain in both the constituencies which saw high electric campaigning, supporters of Congress surge in large numbers towards the counting centres.

  • In Bengaluru, senior BJP leaders head towards state president B S Yeddyurappa house to mull over their almost certain loss.

  • In Gundlupet after the eleventh round, Geeta Mahadev Prasad of Congress is leading with 61,879 votes, while the BJP candidate Niranjan Kumar is trailing with 45,5813 votes.

  • The ninth round of counting in Nanjangud has Congress candidate Kalale Keshavmurthy leading with 49,634 votes and BJP candidate Srinivas Prasad trailing with 32,218 votes.

  • The tenth round of counting in Nanjangud has Congress candidate Kalale Keshavmurthy has increased his lead considerably with 53,988 votes and BJP candidate Srinivas Prasad trailing with 37,343 votes.

  • In Bengaluru senior BJP leader and former Dpeuty Chief Minister R Ashok said they would bow to the wishes of the people, but vowed to fight harder. "The Congress had an advantage and they misused the machinery and they have implemented several schemes for these two areas. But we will not run scared and will work harder," he said.

  • In Tumakuru, a visibly happy KPCC President Parameshwara said they were always confident they would win both the seats as the people were happy with the government schemes implemented in the last four years.

  • Geeta Mahadev Prasad of Congress inching closer to victory with 73,904 votes in Gundlupet after thirteen rounds of counting and BJP candidate Niranjan Kumar is trailing with 65,177 votes.  

  • In Nanjangud, Kalale N Keshavamurthy of Congress leading with 58,261 votes after the eleventh round and Srinivas Prasad of BJP trailing with 41,945 votes.

  • In Gundlupet after the fourtheenth round, Geeta Mahadev Prasad of Congress is leading with 81,101 votes, while the BJP candidate Niranjan Kumar is trailing with 69,847 votes.

  • BJP state party president B S Yeddyurappa insisted it was a not a big setback. Saying he did not expect Srinivas Prasad to lose, Yeddyurappa said they would address gaps in their approach. He said, "I will not criticise anything. It is a new area for us. We have failed to woo the voters and we will work on this." He denied the results were any indication of 2018 Assembly elections, and said that both parties had won bye polls and had nothing to do with how the Assembly results would pan out.

  • The sixth round of counting in Nanjangud still has Congress candidate Kalale Keshavmurthy extending his lead with 35, 936 votes while BJP candidate Srinivas Prasad trailed with 20,351 votes.

  • After the eighth round of counting in Gundlupet, Geeta Mahadev Prasad of Congress is managing to keep her lease with 45,489 votes, while the BJP candidate Niranjan Kumar is trailing with 41,665 votes.
