‘Veerashaiva-Lingayat is one entity’

The question whether Veerashaiva and Lingayat are separate religions has led to trading of charges between supporters of Mathe Mahadevi and Prasanna Veerarenuka Someshwara Swamiji of Rambhapuri mutt.

DAVANGERE : The question whether Veerashaiva and Lingayat are separate religions has led to trading of charges between supporters of Mathe Mahadevi and Prasanna Veerarenuka Someshwara Swamiji of Rambhapuri mutt.Senior leaders of Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha said the Veerashaiva-Lingayat religion is one and they are not separate entities. Mathe Mahadevi had signed a memorandum submitted to the Union government two years seeking an independent religion status for Veerashaiva-Lingayat. The demand for considering Veerashaiva and Lingayat as separate religions is not correct, they said.

Seers of various mutts should discuss the pros and cons of an independent religion status to Veerashaiva-Lingayat, Mahasabha vice-president Athani Veeranna said Tuesday.Meanwhile many swamijis have urged the state to arrest supporters of Mathe for defaming the Rambhapuri swamiji. “Stepping on a photo of the swamiji was unwanted. Those who indulged in the act should be arrested and made to apologise in public”, they said.

The Mahasabha has pointed out that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are the two faces of the same coin. Insulting seers would make devotees lose faith in mutts, the Mahasabha said.
