Govt warns V-C to release funds

With the governor asking the RGUHS to maintain status quo with regard to release of funds for construction of a new campus in Ramanagara, the state government now seems to be employing strong-arm tact

BENGALURU: With the governor asking the RGUHS to maintain status quo with regard to release of funds for construction of a new campus in Ramanagara, the state government now seems to be employing strong-arm tactics. It has sent a letter to the vice-chancellor asking him to transfer the funds forthwith and warned him of stringent action if he does not comply. The letter, sent by the undersecretary in the Department of Medical Education, reads: “As per the amendments to the university Act, the government’s decision will be final in case of release of funds.

Though there is instructions from the government to release one-third of the total estimated cost for construction of the new campus at Ramanagara, which is `193 crore, you have not obeyed the orders.” The letter warns the vice-chancellor to immediately deposit the amount with the Public Works Department. It also says that in case of not obeying government orders, the V-C will be held responsible for any further issue regarding the campus.

In-charge V-C Dr Ramesh said, “We have received the letter and we will reply after getting legal opinion. The decision on not transferring funds was taken by the syndicate and also based on a directive from governor. We are following governor’s direction.” Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said, “If there is a direction from the governor, let the university reply to us stating the same. Then I will discuss with the governor.” He also said the syndicate is not above the government and the decisions taken by the cabinet.
