Soon, vachanas to be translated into Arabic

AFTER several Indian languages, the Vachana literature is all set to be translated into Arabic soon.

MANGALURU: AFTER several Indian languages, the Vachana literature is all set to be translated into Arabic soon. Aravind Jatti, president, Basava Samiti, said an Arabian Prince in a gulf country has shown interest in this regard and hoped to see the Vachanas spreading its influence across the borders soon. He was speaking at the release function of ‘Vachana’, a Konkani translation of about 2,500 popular vachanas of sharanas such as Saint Basavanna, Akkamahadevi and others at World Konkani Centre here on Sunday.

He said the translation of vachanas which was restricted to Kannada language and Karnataka started two years ago with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching a programme to introduce it to people all over the country. He recalled the contributions of litterateur Dr M M Kalburgi who was the chief editor of the Vachana translations into different languages. “When I went to his home after deciding to take Vachanas to other languages, he gave me 3,000 vachanas. He attended the third workshop of Konkani translation which was held just before a week he fell to the bullets of his assailants.”
