Sharanappa Nagaral (26) of Kanasavi village in Raichur district is a sixth semester student at Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology (VVIET) in Mysuru.

On Friday night, Nagaral allegedly consumed poison near the bus depot at Gajendragad and started screaming in pain. Hearing his screams, NWKRTC staff rushed to the spot and shifted him to the local government hospital.

The police found a “death note” in his bag. It mentioned two names - Ahemad Rafiq (32) and Ismail (35) - who, it said, were forcing him to plant bombs at VVIET and other places on the eve of the new year. “They are harassing me. They would not leave me until I completed the job. I don’t want to harm anyone”, the letter said.

But his family members and the police said the student is ‘mentally unstable’ which Gadag Superintendent of Police K Santoshbabu also concurred. He failed in 14 subjects and his love case failed. He was treated at a private hospital for the mental illness and was taken to a hospital in Bagalkot, the SP said.

“His teachers, doctors and family members have confirmed that he is mentally not sound. But the police probing all the angles of the case”, he said.
