Karnataka Education Bill amendment tabled; proposes imprisonment for students involved in paper leaks

The Bill was introduced following a series of question paper leak incidents during the second PUC final examinations of March/April 2016.

BENGALURU: The Karnataka Education Bill (Amendment) 2017, aimed at curbing question paper leak and any other kind of malpractice during examinations, was placed in the ongoing Assembly session, on Thursday. The amendments proposed include imprisoning students involved in the malpractices.

The Bill was introduced following a series of question paper leak incidents during the second PUC final examinations of March/April 2016 that had caused a major embarrassment to the State government.

The Bill has intensified the penalty for people indulging in malpractice.  For instance, students buying the question paper will attract five-year imprisonment. It can be recalled that action could not be initiated against several students, who had a role in question paper leakage, as they were considered minors. The Act also expanded the definition of leakage to include electronic leakage via WhatsApp, circulation of photographs etc.

Additionally, the amendment proposes to withhold a student involved in such practices from appearing for exams for three consecutive years. The institute which involves in such a crime will also loose affiliation.
