HASSAN/MYSURU: Taking exception to Tamil Nadu raising objections to the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the state government is committed to implementing the project and will never turn back.

Speaking to media persons after inaugurating a drinking water project estimated to cost Rs 121 crores in Arasikere, Siddaramaiah said Tamil Nadu is strongly opposing the project only for political reasons. The neighbouring state too will benefit from the project, he said.

The government will have to spend Rs 5,900 crore for the project and the detail project report is awaiting the nod from the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, he said.
In Mysuru, JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy has urged Siddaramaiah to set aside Rs 5,000 crores in the budget for the Mekedatu reservoir project. He said the government must show its political commitment to the project instead of making it a poll gimmick in an election year.

Asked about Tamil Nadu’s strong opposition to Mekedatu project, the JD(S) leader said the Tamil Nadu government has implemented the drinking water supply project for three districts from Hogenekkal with funding of Union government.
