Cab drivers not allowed to protest at Freedom Park

BENGALURU: Drivers of Ola and Uber cabs continued their strike on Saturday. After being denied permission to protest in Freedom Park, they have warned that they will hit the streets.

The cab drivers wanted to hold a protest at Freedom Park but were denied permission by the police, who said they did not have enough men available to be assigned for the protest, said Chandru Kumar, one of the drivers.

In the evening, the drivers went to meet Additional Commissioner of Police Malini Krishnamoorthy to request her to give them permission to hold a protest. They were told to speak to DCP Chandragupta.
Driver Tanveer Pasha said they will try to get permission on Sunday too, failing which they would be forced to protest on the roads on Monday.

Meanwhile, commuters continued to face inconvenience due to the non-availability of cabs. Several citizens tweeted that they had to depend on autorickshaws due to the strike. One of the tweets read, “After 1.4 years I’ve to deal with auto walas again. Thanks to Uber strike.”

Another person tweeted, “Please resolve ongoing strike in Bangalore, we are facing lot of issues for transportation and emergency.”

But the strike also helped ease traffic and reduced travel time, as several other commuters pointed out.
One of the tweets read, “Well behaved traffic today at Bangalore. Looked surreal. But then realised Uber and Ola are on strike. Absolutely no traffic jams and honking.”
